At Concurb Concrete, we execute complex soil removal and replacement projects that strictly align with both the structural demands of the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and the stringent environmental protections of Ontario Regulation 406/19. While we rely on licensed third-party engineers for testing, our physical execution perfectly mirrors their environmental mandates, ensuring all excess and contaminated soils are managed, transported, and replaced with approved engineered fill flawlessly. Phase 1: Pre-Excavation & Environmental Compliance

Before a single bucket of dirt is moved, environmental and structural safety must be established.

Third-Party Soil Testing: Please note that we do not conduct geotechnical or environmental soil testing in-house. Instead, we collaborate seamlessly with licensed third-party environmental engineers and Qualified Persons (QPs).
Provincial Adherence: We strictly adhere to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) guidelines. All excavated materials are managed in full compliance with Ontario Regulation 406/19 (On-Site and Excess Soil Management) to ensure contaminated or excess soil is tracked, transported, and disposed of at approved receiving sites.

Phase 2: Safe Soil Removal (Excavation)

Once the environmental green light is given, the physical removal begins.

Structural Integrity: Excavation operations are conducted in accordance with OBC Division B, Section 4.2.5 (Excavations). We ensure that the removal of soil does not endanger adjoining properties, existing structures, or municipal infrastructure.
Strict Safety Protocols: We enforce rigorous site safety policies under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), O. Reg. 213/91 (Construction Projects). Depending on the soil type (Type 1 through Type 4), all trenches and excavations are properly sloped, stepped, or shored to prevent cave-ins, which is how we maintain our zero-incident safety record.

Phase 3: Subgrade Preparation & Inspection

Removing the old soil is only half the job; preparing the earth to receive new, engineered fill is critical for the long-term stability of the build.

Bearing Capacity Verification: In accordance with OBC Section 4.2.2 (Subsurface Investigation), once we reach the design elevation, the exposed subgrade is inspected. We work alongside the geotechnical engineer to verify that the natural soil at the base of the excavation meets the required safe bearing capacity before any new material is introduced.
Frost Protection: We also ensure the excavation depth complies with OBC Section 4.2.4.4 (Depth of Foundations), removing frost-susceptible soils to get below the local frost line, preventing future heaving.

Phase 4: Engineered Soil Replacement & Compaction

Replacing the soil requires precision engineering, not just backfilling.

Approved Fill Materials: We import only approved, clean, engineered structural fill that matches the project engineer's specifications and meets environmental guidelines.
Lift and Compaction Methodology: The new soil is placed in controlled layers (lifts)—typically no greater than 150mm to 200mm thick. Each lift is mechanically compacted to achieve the required Standard Proctor Maximum Dry Density (usually 98% to 100% under structural footprints).
Continuous Monitoring: We sequence our machinery and heavy rollers meticulously. By staggering our compaction patterns and utilizing modern grading technology, we maximize efficiency—which was a key factor in beating our project deadline by a full week.
